Protect Our Children’s Future: Kumawu MP Rallies Traditional Leaders, Churches Against Child Labour

The Chairman of Parliament’s Human Rights Committee and Member of Parliament for Sekyere Kumawu, Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim, in collaboration with the International Justice Mission (IJM), has organized a stakeholder meeting on human rights and child labour in the Sekyere Kumawu District.

The meeting brought together the Kumawu Traditional Council, the Local Council of Churches, the Muslim community, the Department of Social Welfare, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

Stakeholders shared insights on human rights and child labour, stressing the need for collective action to safeguard children in the district.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Anim reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening child protection in Ghana. He urged all stakeholders, particularly assembly members, to play an active role in ensuring the welfare of children, describing them as the future of the country.

He noted that many children are engaged in hazardous labour, including illegal mining (galamsey), which threatens their future, and called on every community leader to help protect them.

Hon. Anim further appealed to stakeholders to support children in their communities to secure a better future, stay away from hard labour, and have their rights respected.

For his part, Mr. Richard Akwasi Offei, Community Engagement Specialist at IJM, commended Hon. Anim and Parliament for their efforts and called on traditional leaders and other stakeholders, especially Social Welfare, to intensify efforts to protect children from hard labour and human trafficking.

The District Director of CHRAJ, Mr. Desmond Azemeyuo, also urged the public to promptly report cases of human rights abuse, assuring that his office remains open to anyone seeking to lodge a complaint or report acts against the wellbeing of children.
