Farmers Cry Foul as Illegal Mining Pollutes Enru River in Juaben Municipality
Illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, is raising serious environmental concerns in the Juaben Municipality of the Ashanti Region, particularly in Bomfa, Adumasa, and Achiase, where activities have heavily polluted the Enru River.
The river, which originates from the Bosome Freho District, serves as a key source of water for drinking, cooking, and farming in the affected communities. During a visit to Bomfa, environmental journalists observed that despite some reclamation of mined pits, the river has been contaminated with chemicals, making it unsafe for use.
Farmers in the area expressed frustration, saying the pollution has disrupted their livelihoods. Some residents identified individuals, including Akeseh and Frank, as being involved in the mining activities contributing to the pollution. The farmers also alleged that they face intimidation and threats for speaking out against the pollution.
According to the farmers, some miners are operating too close to the Enru River, in violation of Minerals Commission regulations on safe mining distances.
When contacted by Isaac Ochem, leader of the Environmental Reporting Journalists, Akeseh admitted to working at different mining sites in Bomfa but denied responsibility for polluting the river.
Bomfa Electoral Area Assembly Member, Hon. Innocent, confirmed that mining activities are ongoing in the area. He said he has consistently educated miners on the need to follow small-scale mining regulations. He also commended Akeseh for undertaking reclamation after mining and engaging in what he described as responsible small-scale mining.
Environmental advocates are calling for stricter enforcement of mining laws to protect the Enru River and the livelihoods of farming communities that depend on it.
