Waste Management Eats Up Most of KMA Revenue- Mayor Raises Alarm

Kumasi Mayor Hon. Ofori Agyemang Boadi has revealed that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) spends most of its revenue on waste management, a burden he says is becoming unsustainable.

Speaking during a city clean-up exercise, Mr. Boadi said Kumasi generates over 2,000 tons of waste daily, with each ton costing GH₵83 to dispose of and treat at the Oti Landfill site. Beyond that, KMA also covers fuel for compactor trucks and machinery, waste transportation, and sanitation workers’ salaries.

The financial pressure is worsened by waste from neighboring municipalities — Asokwa, Suame, Tafo, Kwadaso, Ejisu, and Asokore Mampong which produce an additional 6,000 to 8,000 tons daily. The cost of handling that waste is also borne by KMA.

Mr. Boadi warned that if measures are not implemented, the Oti Landfill could reach full capacity within three months. He noted that constructing new cells at the site would cost an estimated 6 million euros.

To ease the strain, the Assembly is considering restricting waste disposal from nearby municipalities at Oti Landfill.

The mayor urged residents to dispose of waste properly to help reduce the financial burden on KMA.
