PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED PERSONS COMMEND PRESIDENT FOR FREE TERTIARY EDUCATION, URGE GOV’TO MAKE CAMPUSES DISABILITY-FRIENDLY
Persons living with physical challenges have commended the President for the introduction of free tertiary education, describing it as a major step toward inclusive education and equal opportunities for all citizens.
Speaking during International Disability Day in Kumasi, Mr Stephen Gyan regional chairman for Ghana Federation of Disability Organization said the policy has removed a major financial burden that had prevented many students with disabilities from pursuing higher education. They praised the President for showing commitment to education and social inclusion.
However, he also appealed to the government to make university and other tertiary institution campuses more disability-friendly. According to him, many schools still lack basic facilities such as ramps, elevators, accessible classrooms, hostels, and toilets, making it difficult for students with physical challenges to move around and study comfortably.
Mr Stephen Gyan noted that while free education is a welcome development, accessibility remains a major challenge. “Education is not only about removing school fees. It also means creating an environment where every student, regardless of physical condition, can learn without obstacles,” he said.
They called on the government, school authorities, and relevant agencies to work together to improve campus infrastructure and ensure that all tertiary institutions meet accessibility standards.
The group expressed hope that the government would act on their request, saying it would further strengthen the impact of the free tertiary education policy and promote equality in the education sector.
The Ashanti regional President for Ghana Federation of Disability Mr Andrews Minkah Gyimah urged government to develop assistive technology environment for the person’s with disability to empower their lives and advance their inclusion in the nation building.
