Government urged to Include Herbal Medicine in National Health Insurance

The Chief Executive Officer of Amagashi Herbal Clinic, Apostle Samuel Amagashi, has made a passionate appeal to the government to recognize and support the herbal medicine industry in Ghana. During a recent meeting with stakeholders, Apostle Amagashi emphasized the need for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to cover herbal medicines, just like orthodox hospitals.
According to him ,a significant 65% of Ghanaians prefer herbal medicine over conventional medicine. He attributed this preference to the perceived efficacy and affordability of herbal remedies. However, he noted that many Ghanaians are unable to access these benefits due to lack of recognition and support from the government.
The CEO also highlighted the need for herbal nursing training in Ghana. He believes that formal training programs would equip practitioners with the necessary skills to provide high-quality herbal care. This, in turn, would boost confidence in herbal medicine and increase its adoption.
Apostle Amagashi further urged the government to provide free national health insurance for herbal medicine, similar to the coverage offered for orthodox medical treatment. He emphasized that this would make herbal medicine more accessible to a wider population, particularly those who cannot afford it.
The CEO’s plea underscores the growing recognition of traditional medicine in Ghana and the need for the government to develop policies that support its growth. By acknowledging the importance of herbal medicine and providing the necessary support, the government can help improve healthcare outcomes for Ghanaians.
