Parliament Holds Workshop on Human Rights and Migration in Koforidua

Today, Parliament, in collaboration with UNICEF, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), CHRAJ, ACEPA and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), commenced a field monitoring and capacity-building workshop in Koforidua to deliberate on important issues relating to human rights and migration.

The first session focused on migration trends and dynamics in Ghana and West Africa, where we were reminded of the importance of using rights-based language. The term “illegal migrant” can undermine the dignity and human rights of migrants; hence, the preferred term is “irregular migrant.”

Discussions also examined the International, Regional and National Frameworks on Migration, with particular attention to the vulnerability of women and children. The need for humane and well-coordinated migration management was emphasised to prevent trauma, exploitation and the exposure of children to dehumanising conditions.

The workshop further highlighted the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) and the importance of reliable migration data. Accurate data is essential for effective national planning, particularly in areas such as healthcare, social protection and other public services.

As Parliament continues to strengthen its oversight role, these engagements provide valuable opportunities to deepen our understanding of migration and human rights and translate discussions into practical actions for the benefit of all.
