NPP Minority Caucus Begins Three-Day Bono East Tour to Address Farmers’ Challenges
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament has embarked on a three-day regional tour in the Bono East Region to assess and address the challenges confronting farmers in cocoa, cashew, yam, and maize production.
The tour, which commenced on Tuesday, March 14, 2026, and will end on Thursday, March 16, 2026, is aimed at engaging directly with farmers, understanding their concerns, and amplifying their voices to the public and relevant authorities.
The Bono East leg of the tour is being led by the Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh. On the first day, the delegation visited the Atebubu-Amantin, Pru West, and Kintampo North constituencies.
Speaking during an engagement with farmers and traders at the Atebubu Yam Market, Hon. Annoh-Dompreh called on the NDC government, led by John Dramani Mahama, to prioritize the purchasing of food crops to stabilize prices and provide relief to struggling farmers.
He emphasized that many farmers are currently grappling with post-harvest losses due to the lack of ready markets, stressing that government intervention through structured purchasing would help sustain livelihoods and ensure food security.
On his part, the Member of Parliament for Offinso South Constituency and Ranking Member on the Agriculture Committee, Isaac Yaw Opoku, urged the government to strengthen the buffer stock system by actively procuring food items from farmers. He noted that an effective buffer stock mechanism would not only prevent wastage but also help regulate food prices across the country.
Some farmers and traders who participated in the engagement expressed dissatisfaction with current market conditions, citing low prices, lack of access to ready markets, high transportation costs, and inadequate government support.
The Minority Caucus assured stakeholders that their concerns would be presented in Parliament and used to advocate for policies that will improve the agricultural sector.
