Cocoa Farmers Express Hope for Improved Support Amid Price Concerns
Cocoa farmers in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality have expressed hope for improved support for the cocoa sector despite concerns over the recent reduction in cocoa prices.
The concerns were raised during an engagement held at Nkontomire where cocoa farmers met with the officials from cocoabod and the Atwima Nwabiagya South Assembly, together with executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to deliberate on issues affecting cocoa production and the welfare of farmers.
The engagement was aimed at educating farmers on developments within the cocoa sector, particularly the concerns surrounding cocoa pricing, while encouraging them to remain committed to cocoa farming which remains one of the major economic activities in the municipality.
During the interaction, the delegation also presented some farming tools including cutlasses and farming boots to selected farmers to support their work and enhance productivity.
Speaking in an interview with the media after the meeting, the Akuafo Hemaa of Atwima Nwabiagya South, Nana Achiaa Nantie, acknowledged that cocoa farmers continue to face a number of challenges, including concerns over cocoa prices and access to farming inputs.
She however expressed optimism that authorities would continue to engage farmers and introduce measures aimed at improving their livelihoods and sustaining cocoa production in the area.
According to her, cocoa farming remains the main source of livelihood for many families in the municipality, making it important for stakeholders to pay attention to the needs of farmers.
The NDC Chairman for Atwima Nwabiagya South, Abu Sadiq, also used the opportunity to caution farmers against selling their farmlands to illegal miners, popularly known as galamsey operators.
He warned that illegal mining activities pose a serious threat to cocoa farms, water bodies and the environment, which could negatively affect cocoa production if not checked.
Mr. Sadiq therefore urged farmers to protect their lands and remain vigilant against individuals who may attempt to acquire farmlands for illegal mining activities.
Some farmers who participated in the engagement also appealed to authorities and other stakeholders within the cocoa sector to continue supporting cocoa farmers in order to sustain production and improve the welfare of farming communities across the municipality.
