Regulate Galamsey Mining, Not Ban It” – Bishop Advises President Mahama
Bishop Saint Oteng Joseph, the preceding Bishop for Church of God Ghana, has advised President John Dramani Mahama to regulate galamsey mining instead of banning it outright. Speaking at the dedication of the Arnold Church of God at Kumasi Santase branch, Bishop Joseph emphasized that since many people depend on mining for their livelihood, a blanket ban might not be the most effective solution.
According to Bishop Joseph, the government can establish guidelines to protect the environment and ensure responsible mining practices. This approach would not only safeguard the land and water bodies but also provide opportunities for youth to engage in sustainable mining activities.
The Bishop’s stance comes amidst growing concerns about the environmental impact of galamsey mining in Ghana. President Mahama has previously announced plans to amend the Minerals and Mining Act to permanently ban mining in forest reserves, citing the need to protect the country’s environment and reclaim degraded lands.
In a related development, Fankyenebra Local Church Head Pastor Bishop Agyei Harrison Williams used the occasion to caution youth against substance abuse, warning that such habits can have long-term negative consequences. He also urged parents to prioritize their children’s welfare over material possessions during a church reopening ceremony at Santase Fankyenebra.
