Blatant power theft in Ghana very worrying -GECA fumes
The Ghana electrical contractors association (GECA) have expressed worries over power theft in the country.
According to them, they have taken notice of a Joynews hotlines documentary dubbed “Power Thieves where the Electricity Company Of Ghana ( ECG ) staffs and others sell unapproved meters at exorbitant price” In the said video, some unscrupulous persons claiming to be Electrical Contractors and Energy Commission officials are seen taking money from unsuspecting service applicants with the promise to secure them energy meters.
GECA finds the actions of these individuals very worrying and wishes to state that, illegal service acquisition and energy theft should not have a place in the economic development of Ghana.they stressed;
The association has therefore charged the Electricity Company Of Ghana (ECG) to use every available legal means to ensure a successful prosecution of any person involved in illegal power activity.
“GECA is against any form of illegal activity and hereby admonishes Electrical Contractors in the country to desist from any form of illegal practice that worsens Ghana’s electricity challenges and tarnishes the hard earned reputation of the entire electrical fraternity.
We therefore tasked all GECA leadership at the regional and district levels to report any suspected illegal practices to the appropriate ECG officers and ensure that due action is taken.
GECA will not hesitate to sanction any member found culpable of any illegal activity.
We encourage the ECG Management to take immediate steps to ensure that the challenges customers face during service applications and connections are urgently addressed.
