A/R: FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF MMDAs IN FIRST QUARTER OF 2023 WITNESS SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT
The financial performance of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Ashanti Region with regards to the mobilization of Internally Generated Funds (IGFs) is reported to have witnessed significant improvement in the first quarter of 2023 under review.
This was made known at the first Regional Coordinating Council meeting in 2023.
The RCC meeting is a statutory meeting where members of the RCC, including MMDCEs, PMs, two chiefs, Heads of Departments, with the Regional Minister as Chairman and the Regional Coordinating Director as secretary come together to discuss issues bordering on development in the Region.
The Regional Minister, as Chairman of the RCC in his address, touched on various areas such as health, sanitation, IGFs, flooding, security, activities and programmes under the Regional Planning Coordinating Unit, Medium Term Development Plans among others.
According to Hon. Simon Osei Mensah, improvements in the domestic revenue mobilization of the assemblies were as a result of stringent measures that were laid down to be followed strictly by the various MMDAs.
“Last year, during our last RCC meeting, the revenue accrued from IGFs was not satisfactory. Also, some MMDAs refused to submit their financial statements for perusal, so we had dialogue with them afterwards about the consequences of such practices and even queried some.
We also monitored their activities effectively as time went by. All these measures contributed significantly to the improvement we are witnessing this time round because irregularities with regards to management of public funds were minimal,” he stated.
On security, he noted that constant police swoops, highway patrols, and digitization contributed significantly to the peace and security of the region.
