Poor Sanitation Poses Serious Public Health Crisis – Environmental Health Expert Warns As Afigya Kwabre North Holds Massive Clean-Up

The District Environmental Health Analyst for Afigya Kwabre North, Mrs. Ellen Grace Wiafe, has described poor sanitation as a serious public health crisis, warning that indiscriminate waste disposal and open defecation are fueling preventable diseases in the country.

According to her, poor environmental hygiene is a major cause of cholera, dysentery, typhoid fever, malaria and other life-threatening illnesses. She said lack of public education on sanitation continues to expose many Ghanaians to these diseases.

Mrs. Wiafe gave the caution during a special monthly sanitation exercise organized by the Afigya Kwabre North District Assembly at Soko and Abroma.
She appealed to local authorities and stakeholders to sustain regular communal clean-up exercises and intensify public health education to promote good sanitation practices.
Meanwhile, the Assembly Member for the Abroma Electoral Area, Hon. Collins Danso, has commended residents of Soko and Abroma for their massive turnout and support for the exercise.
He disclosed that over 600 people participated in the clean-up, weeding bushy areas, desilting gutters and sweeping the entire electoral area.
Hon. Danso said he was overwhelmed by the selflessness and commitment shown by residents, noting that the Assembly’s continuous awareness campaigns are yielding positive results and changing attitudes towards sanitation.
He added that the Assembly will not rush to punish non-compliant residents but will continue to engage and educate them to embrace proper sanitation practices.
