President Mahama Launches Nkoko Nketenkete Initiative, Pledges 80,000 Birds, Housing, Logistics for 50 Anchor Farmers
President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday launched the Nkoko Nkete Nkete Household and Backyard Poultry Production Initiative at Kumasi Jubilee Park, pledging 80,000 birds, standard housing and logistics for 50 anchor farmers to revive Ghana’s poultry sector.
The programme, a flagship component of the Poultry Industry Revitalisation Programme under the Feed Ghana agenda, aims to boost domestic production and cut the $350 million spent on poultry imports in 2023.
Under the plan, 50 anchor farmers will each receive 80,000 day‑old chicks, housing units, vehicles and continuous technical support, targeting an output of 4 million birds. An additional 500 small‑ and medium‑scale farmers across all 16 regions will be assisted, expected to generate 3 million birds.
Every one of Ghana’s 276 constituencies will get 10,000 birds for onward distribution to vulnerable households – 50 birds per family, plus feed and training.
Construction of a modern poultry processing factory at Bechem is slated to begin soon, providing a ready market for producers in Bono, Ashanti and Bono‑East regions. The government also plans to expand veterinary services, operationalise an Innovative Agric Financing Scheme for affordable credit, and set up 270 mechanisation and extension centres.
“This is a national movement, a courageous step toward restoring food self‑sufficiency, strengthening household resilience and fostering sustainable livelihoods for tens of thousands of Ghanaians,” President Mahama declared.
Ghana’s poultry self‑sufficiency currently sits at 12 %. The initiative seeks to lift it to 75 % by 2028, while curbing importation of frozen chicken.
The launch was attended by thousands of farmers, government officials and stakeholders, underscoring broad support for the ambitious plan to transform Ghana’s poultry value chain.
