Historic Milestone: 8th Parliament’s Dissolution Paves Way for 9th Parliament

Ghana’s 8th Parliament is coming to an end today, January 6, 2025, after a four-year term that began on January 7, 2021. This legislative body has been one of the most closely contested in Ghana’s history, with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) holding an equal number of seats – 137-137 with one Independent Member. The unique balance of power led to intense debates and negotiations, making for a fascinating period in Ghana’s political landscape.

As the 8th Parliament dissolves, a final sitting will be held, presided over by the Speaker of Parliament, the Right Honourable Alban Bagbin. During this session, Members of Parliament will conclude any outstanding business and bid farewell to the chamber. At midnight, newly elected Members of Parliament will be sworn in, marking the beginning of the 9th Parliament. This transition will also see the election of a new Speaker or the continuation of the current Speaker if re-elected.
