Silent Majority of UTAG Petitions Against Indefinite Strike, Calls for Immediate Resolution

Accra, Ghana – A group within the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), calling themselves the “Silent Majority,” has petitioned the National Executive Committee (NEC) of UTAG to call off the ongoing indefinite strike. Speaking at a press conference, the group expressed concern over the recent industrial action, arguing that the NEC’s decision to declare the strike exceeded the mandate given by UTAG members.

The press statement, delivered on behalf of the Silent Majority, outlined that while UTAG members had overwhelmingly supported the nationwide ban on illegal mining activities (galamsey), the strike, in its current form, was not part of the original agreement. According to the group, UTAG’s participation in an Organised Labour meeting on October 9 led to the suspension of a nationwide strike following assurances from the government. The group asserts that the strike mandate should have expired with this decision.

“We are of the firm conviction that the NEC should focus its attention on holding the government accountable for implementing the roadmap presented to Organised Labour, of which UTAG was represented,” the group said, urging NEC to shift its focus to practical solutions rather than prolonged industrial action.

The Silent Majority made three urgent requests: an immediate end to the strike by October 18, the formation of a monitoring team to oversee the government’s efforts in tackling galamsey, and for UTAG leadership to engage with political leaders to secure their support for the anti-illegal mining campaign.

The group emphasized that their aim was not to undermine UTAG leadership but to ensure that all members’ interests were represented. They called for unity within UTAG and across Ghana in addressing the critical issue of illegal mining, which continues to devastate the nation’s environment and economy.

The statement concluded with a rallying call for national solidarity in the fight against galamsey, urging all stakeholders, from presidential candidates to local communities, to join forces in this ongoing battle.
