Poverty eradication : Womens Haven churns out 40 trainess employable skills

The Women’s Haven Africa has graduated some 40 marginalized women with various skills in the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti Region as part of efforts to reduce poverty and economically empower women.

The training which took about six months equipped the participants in various fields including sewing and textiles  upcycling among others.

According to the organization, the project aimed at providing vocational and entrepreneurial skills to the vulnerable women, enabling them to develop sustainable livelihoods and reduce poverty.

The Women’s Skills Development Project was implemented in partnership with Plan International Ghana and funded by the Global Affairs Canada.

Speaking to newsmen in a news sideline the Programmes and Community Manager of the organization, Afia Oforiwaa Owusu, indicated that the objective of the project was to promoting financial inclusion, economic empowerment and inclusivity.

She explained that the initiative target to equip the participants with some employable skills including sewing, textiles upcycling skills, digital skills, financial management skills, entrepreneurial skills among others towards giving them sustainable livelihoods.

Oforiwaa expressed excitement about the successful completion of the project and that the trainees were able to produce some wonderful products that marveled many people during the event.

She was positive the step will go a long way to reduce the high rate of unemployment in the Asokwa Municipality and the region at large, since the beneficiaries will set up businesses to help themselves and their families as well as employ others.

“With this training, they can also start something on their own, and then as they do this, it will also help the community because, they will actually employ people as the business grows, they will need people to help them, they can also train other people in their communities which will help reduce unemployment,” she indicated.

She urged the participants to continue to learn new things in their various fields in order to further enhance their skills.

The Asokwa Municipal Director of Social Welfare and Community Development, Dickson Frimpong, laudable the Women’s Haven Africa for rolling out such an initiative to help women in the municipality.

He said the women were mostly people who were hopeless, but the project has turned their misfortunes into something meaningful.

Mr. Frimpong noted that, the Municipal assembly was very proud partnering the Women’s Haven Africa and supporting some of the trainees with sewing machines particularly, those living with disability.

He said the assembly will always be ready to support and partner organizations with good initiatives like the Women’s Haven Africa to effectively empower deprived people, especially women.

The Chief Executice Officer of the Akaal Skills Development Academy and Akaal Dekor, Madam Hawah Braimah said the project was very important considering the huge positive impact it will have on the participants and communities.

With the recyling training, she noted that it will help to significantly tackle the issue of flooding as waste products will be transformed into amazing goods.

“The waste is choking everywhere and places are getting flooded because of the waste in the system and if we are able to recycle these wastes and make them usage, it’s like we are bringing back the dead fabrics into life, to expand their lifespan, instead of just going to throw it away, you will turn it into something usage that can serve some purpose,” she said.

Some of the participants appreciated the Women’s Haven Africa and the Asokwa Municipal assembly for their commitment and dedication towards alleviating their plights.

They said the project will go a long way to help them create employment for themselves and others in their communities.
