Kumasi Petty Traders Celebrate Their 3rd Anniversary

The Kumasi Central Market Redevelopment project in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti region has been put on hold because of the ongoing talks on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, Kumasi Mayor, Mr Sam Pyne has said.

He said the international funders who are supposed to release funds for the project have suspended releasing funds due to the ongoing talks on the IMF programme.

Mr Pyne was responding to a question posed to him by the Kumasi Central Market Petty Traders Association about why work on the market has stalled during the association’s 3rd-anniversary celebration of its evacuation from the market for the commencement of the project.

The Mayor said not only the Central Market project which has been put on hold but also the Kumasi Airport expansion project, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s (KATH) maternity and children’s block, roads being constructed by the Chinese in the region as well as some projects in Koforidua and Temale.

He indicated that the project has not stalled but has rather been put on hold and once talks on the IMF deal are completed, work will resume.

Mr Pyne said he together with the Ashanti regional Minister and the Local Government Minister has met His excellency, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo about three times concerning the project as well as the President has also met Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on the project.

He therefore, urged the traders to exercise restraint while assuring them that measures are in place to resume work and complete the project on time.

The President of the Kumasi Central Market Petty Traders Association, Madam Sara Osei Bonsu, also plea with the government to  build the market for them because the income tax they  will pay will benefit us all.

Again, she plea with all the MP’s in ashanti region both NPP and NDC to come their aid or they will advise themselves.
