Mahama Cracks Down on Illegal Mining, Launches Tree Restoration Initiative

President John Dramani Mahama has launched a bold initiative to protect Ghana’s forest reserves, while also vowing to sack any government official involved in illegal mining. The Tree For Life Restoration Initiative, launched in the Atwima Nwabiagya South municipality, Ashanti region, aims to restore degraded forest reserves and promote sustainable land use.

Speaking at the launch, President Mahama warned government officials to distance themselves from illegal mining activities, which have devastated the country’s forests and water bodies. He emphasized that any official found to be involved in illegal mining will face dismissal.

The President also called on all stakeholders, including traditional leaders, public and private institutions, and schools, to support the initiative by planting trees and helping to protect the forest reserves.

Oheneba Nana Kwame Akoto, chief of Nkawiekuma, expressed gratitude to the President and pledged his community’s support for the initiative.
