Energy Commission To Markets SHS Renewable Challenge Projects
The Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Ing. Oscar Amonoo-Neizer, has said they will be commercializing projects produced out of the commission’s Senior High Schools’ Renewable Energy Challenge to solve real-time problems.
He said the commission has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to refine and add value to winning products from the competition.
The last two years’ winning projects, Ing. Amonoo-Neizer said, are being worked on and will be exhibited at this year’s final competition scheduled for October 8, 2024.
Speaking to the media at the Southern Zone challenge in Kumasi, he said proceeds from the commercialization of the products will be given to the schools to assist them internally.
The Energy Commission Senior High Schools Renewable Energy Challenge was initiated by the commission in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service in 2019.
It aims to foster interest in renewable energy and energy efficiency among students in Second Cycle Institutions.
Students from the selected schools, during the competition, showcase their innovative renewable energy projects developed by students, and a panel of judges selects the winner.
During the Southern Zone competition today at the KNUST, eight schools including Kpando SHS, Obuasi SHTS, Ahantaman Girls’ SHS, Wesley Grammar SHS, Sefwi Bekwai SHS, St Roses SHS, Worawora SHS, and Mfantsipim School competed.
After a competitive event, Kpando SHS was crowned as the Southern Zone champions followed by Obuasi SHTS and Ahantaman Girls’ SHS. The three schools will be representing the Southern Zone at the National competition scheduled for October 8, 2024, in Accra.
Ing. Amonoo-Neizer expressed his admiration for the renewable energy innovation projects of the competing schools.
For his part, the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr. William Kwame Amankra Appiah said the competition was a way of bringing out the creativity in the students and putting into work, the theoretical aspect of what they have learned.
